  1. First reaction: Wow. For all our talk about everything “being for the children,” our society actually encourages us in the opposite direction. It tells parents to take time for themselves, that there’s nothing wrong with daycare, that parents can’t do it as well as a school run by a bureaucracy. But as a parent, is sacrificing your wants for 18 years or so REALLY that onerous? The early years of a child’s life are incredibly important and have everything to do with the rest of his or her life. A person needs to feel secure and loved and protected as a child to feel secure and loved as an adult.

  2. Oh wow, Paul. You must imagine how this piece touches me so deeply. “Pandemic” is such a scary word–but truly you’ve used it so accurately here–the daily news is overflowing with evidence of this catastrophe. I remember that I was fairly young when I made the decision I wouldn’t have children–in that one respect at least, I was quite mature; and though many judged me selfish, I rather think quite the opposite–if one is not equipped to be a better than average parent, and KNOWS it, it is the only responsible choice, in my view. And I’ve never regretted it.
