“The Unfortunate Land of Tirol” by Franz Marc
majestic roofline
where Europe climbs to her dreams
cleansing alpine breaths
give respite from history
rancid with savage conflicts
this pristine cloudland
dissolves national borders
competing interests
discover common purpose
elevate humanity
From my books Pieces of Wine and Riverthink
I recently got into a long discussion about the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. Killing the Archduke was largely a ceremonial act because, at the start of the 20th century, heads of state were already hell-bent on driving the entire European continent into war. Less than two decades later, history repeated itself, except of course, we had gotten much better at killing by then. I can’t help but feel like today’s leaders are trying to put us back on another collision course.
I think poets have a responsibility to speak out against this kind of recklessness. Certainly, this poem does a wonderful job of speaking to that cause.

“dissolves national borders”
No chemical can do this!
Because, of course, no chemical can dissolve a pure fiction.

I like taking a respite from history. Thanks for a moment of quiet. Wonderful picture despite being a bit noir, as its title indicates.
