we chose the far field
the dun sands of scorpions
we scattered their venom
to stealth scarps of asylum
now they watch our retreat

(Regarding the Afghan elections)
what to do with freedom
new and jagged and raw
still angry with warlords
and reprobate mullahs
diseased in their spleens
opposed to clean minds
cutting sinister sinews
of culture the beast under
butchery flailing its last
what to do with freedom
pull from the bloodletting
bones of new choices red
meat of decisions new marks
upon ballots tomorrow
will count beneath cloudless
blue skies crowning purple
washed mountains awaiting
new trails to unknown
but deliberate destiny
